  • This will be the second men’s Test between England and Ireland; England won their inaugural meeting by 143 runs in July 2019 at Lord’s.
  • England lost their most recent men’s Test by a single run (February 2023 v New Zealand), snapping a six-match winning run in the format; they will be looking to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time since December 2021.
  • Ireland have lost all six of their men’s Tests, including each of their last two by an innings margin; New Zealand (D22, L22), Bangladesh (D3, L31), India (D12, L12), Sri Lanka (D5, L8), South Africa (D1, L10) and Zimbabwe (D6, L4) are the teams to have begun their history in the format on a longer winless run.
  • England will be looking to avoid back-to-back defeats in men’s Tests at Lord’s for the first time since July 1999, following their innings and 12-run defeat to South Africa in their last such fixture (August 2022).
  • England are the only team yet to take a wicket on the first ball of an over in men’s Tests in 2023; Ireland have logged three wickets in this category, the second fewest of any team.
  • England have a batting strike rate of 80.6 facing pace bowling in men’s Tests in 2023, the best of any team this year; in addition, they have hit a boundary once every nine balls faced against pace, the second most frequent of any team in the format this year (Bangladesh – once every 8.5 balls faced).
  • Ben Stokes (England) has scored 73% of his 110 runs from boundaries in men’s Tests in 2023, the best rate of any player this year (min. 70 runs scored).
  • Harry Brook (England) has hit a boundary once every 5.5 balls faced in men’s Tests in 2023, the most frequent of any player this year (min. 65 balls faced).
  • Andy McBrine has taken 41% of Ireland’s wickets when he’s played in men’s Tests in 2023, the third best rate of any player this year (Taijul Islam – 45% for Bangladesh and Josh Hazlewood – 42% for Australia).
  • Lorcan Tucker (Ireland) has scored 77 runs from sweep shots (inc. reverse sweeps) in men’s Tests in 2023, 17 more than any other player this year and 50 more than England’s best (Joe Root – 27).
